Waterwheel Swallet
Information
Country:
England
Region:
Mendip
Subregion:
Charterhouse
System:
Waterwheel
Near Manor Farm, 50m South-East of the black-down car park. Follow road and turn left just before the gate towards Manor Farm
Once at the entrance, an SWCC key is needed to open the gate awkwardly. Follow the ladder down and follow the path down the steps (upwards is towards the old entrance used by the Romans when they were mining lead here), continuing down the obvious route past a large flowstone covered in gour pools. Keep continuing down a chimney, leading into a pool of water near the bottom. Enter the water and start swimming down the first canal before awkwardly exiting like a whale and entering into the second canal. Once exiting, follow the cave to a 7m drop (ladder or rope required) with an in-situ and chain present. At the base of this drop is a 1.5m pool of water dammed naturally. The cave continues here but not for long, so feel free to ignore.
NOTE - the ladder out of the pool can be challenging, especially for cold and tired freshers who didn’t swim much in the pool.
